06/06/2022 Mandated Reporters

Oles, City of Santa Monica

Hi all - as you might know, the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (“CANRA”) identifies categories of “mandatory reporters.” The reporters are required by law to report a particular category or type of abuse to the appropriate law enforcement or social service agency, as well as, undergo training on annual basis. Specifically, section 11165.7 (copy attached) defines mandatory reporters and includes over 40 different categories of mandatory reporters. It contains a broad category covering: 8) An administrator, board member, or employee of a public or private organization whose duties require direct contact and supervision of children, including a foster family agency.” We are updating the list of mandated reporters for Santa Monica. For your entity, are you designating all your employees as "mandated reporters" based on the broad category or certain ones based on more narrow categories?

We have identified positions that we believe belong in this category. I attached our policy that lists these categories along with training requirements that the City provides biannually.

Oles, we are currently dealing with this issue now as we are bringing on interns that are minors.  We are also cleaning up some of our other programs...lifeguards, police explorers, junior police academy camps, etc.

Would like to hear what others are doing, but our plan at this time is those employees who work in and around the minors will go through manadated reporter trianing through Vector Soutions.
